Feel like taking a biking trip through some of Iceland’s interesting landscapes? Biking Company and Iceland Buddy invite you to join them on a trip to Hengill the still active volcano in an area that is geothermically very active. In fact, the area has two power stations that turn this activity into electricity for local homes.
This is a great area for cycle tours as the mossy hillsides are full of thermal springs, fumaroles and steam vents. Steamy clouds hang above the rugged and beautiful emerald green slopes, and a warm thermal river drains down the valley. We’ll take the single Ölkelduhnjúkur trail to Hveragerði, which is in a lava field created five thousand years ago.
The town is alongside a beautiful and very popular geothermal park. Here you can take a soak in the warm waters of the river whilst you gaze upon the exquisite landscapes that surround you.
Participants need to be prepared for a wide range of weather. Expect the temperature to dip down to below 10°C (below 50°F) and to warm up to 15-20°C (60-70°F). Bring a small backpack, water bottle, warm clothing, winter gear, good outdoor shoes and warm gloves. Bring also your swimming suit, we are dipping in to warm geothermal pool during the trip.
